About · BOWREX · From Tugboat Principle to Sailboat Docking

A deployable mini tug idea, born from commercial seamanship.

I graduated in 1978 from Korea Maritime & Ocean University . My background is not only recreational sailing. I came from professional seamanship — large commercial vessels, harbor maneuvering, real docking pressure, and the constant need for controlled force at the right moment.

As a professional mariner, I saw the same truth again and again: when a large commercial vessel entered or left port, we often needed tugboats. Without tug assistance, many docking and undocking operations simply could not be done safely. A tugboat was not just extra power. It was controlled side force, placed exactly where the vessel needed help.

The tugboat principle.
In commercial harbors, tugboats provide controlled side force exactly when the bow needs help. BOWREX brings that principle down to sailboat scale.

Since the 1980s, I often wondered whether that tugboat idea could someday become smaller. If batteries became stronger, and if electric motors became lighter and more powerful, could a vessel carry its own small tug-like device on board? Could a compact unit be deployed only when needed, push the bow for docking, and then be retrieved after the maneuver?

BOWREX is that idea, first applied to my own sailboat. It is not simply an attempt to copy a conventional bow thruster. The concept comes from the tugboat itself: a small, deployable source of controlled thrust that helps move the bow during docking.

In simple terms, BOWREX is a deployable mini tug for your bow. Compact on deck, but built for serious short-burst thrust. It is designed for docking assistance on sailboats up to 42 ft, depending on setup, conditions, and installation choices.

This became possible because of modern lithium battery technology, high-power BLDC electric motors, and a smart control system. The kind of compact electric power that was difficult to imagine decades ago can now be carried, deployed, controlled, and retrieved in a practical sailboat workflow.

BOWREX also adds a smart control system to that power. Instead of simply acting as a basic on/off thruster, the current control setup supports Hull-Hold standby and push-button short-burst thrust control. When the key is turned on, BOWREX enters a low-RPM Hull-Hold state. When the push button is held, RPM increases for docking-assist thrust. When the button is released, the system returns to Hull-Hold.

BOWREX is not a tunnel thruster and does not require permanent underwater installation. It is carried on board, deployed when docking or undocking, used for short controlled bow pushes, then retrieved and stowed after use. No hull drilling. No permanent underwater hardware. No drag while sailing.

Core idea: BOWREX is not just a thrust device. It is a miniature tugboat concept — made practical by modern batteries, BLDC motors, Hull-Hold control, push-button short-burst thrust, and the BOWREX Platform as its deployable external structural foundation.

The current product direction starts with the Main Thruster Housing as the core printed structure of the BOWREX Platform. Around that platform foundation, sailors can add optional printed parts, control components, compatible propulsion parts, and boat-specific finishing choices to build a complete BOWREX system.

I’m a proud member of Cedar Island Yacht Club . BOWREX was shaped by real docking situations — wind, current, tight fairways, limited time, and the need for controlled bow movement without cutting into the hull.

The goal is to start with sailboats first. Commercial vessels may be a future direction, but this first implementation is personal and practical: solve the problem on my own yacht, make the workflow simple, and then offer BOWREX to other sailors who face the same docking stress.

I’ve lived in Canada for 30 years. Our family has stayed close to the water through sailing, swimming, discipline, and practical hands-on work. BOWREX reflects that same culture: simple in use, engineered in structure, and built around real marine conditions.

Mini tug concept

BOWREX is shaped as a deployable mini tug system rather than a conventional tunnel thruster.

Smart electric power

Lithium batteries, BLDC motors, Hull-Hold control, and push-button short-burst thrust make compact bow-assist power practical on board.

No hull drilling

Deploy only when docking, retrieve after use, and avoid permanent underwater installation.

Sailing Racing

Racing reinforces timing, control, and calm decision-making — the same mindset behind BOWREX: short-burst bow correction, controlled response, and practical engineering under real conditions.
